Indices - rules

Key: ^ means to the power of

Rule 1:        a^m x a^n      =   a^m + n                  e.g. a^2 x a^3 = a^5

Rule 2:       a^m ÷ a^n = a^m-n                            e.g. a^5 ÷ a^3 = a^2

Rule 3:       anything to the power of 0=1           e.g. 2^0 = 1

Rule 4:       (a^m)^n = a^m x n                           e.g. (a^3)^2 = a^6

Rule 5:       a^-n = 1 over a^n                             e.g. 2^-3 = 1 over 2^3 = 1 over 8

Rule 6:       a^m over n = 3rd square root a^m e.g. 64^2over3 =

                                                                           3rd square root 64^2 = 4^2 = 16

indices - practice questions

Write in index form: (if you write the question out properly on paper it will be easier to understand, i cant work out how to do symbols eg square root sign on the computer)

1) ( square root of t) ^3

2) 1 over 4 ^3

3) 1 over x ^5

4) 4 over x ^3
