Diploid – a cell with a full set of chromosomes
Haploid – a cell with half as many chromosomes
Chromatin – chromosomes wrapped around proteins called histones.
Cell Cycle
Interphase:
•G1 phase – the cell grows (new organelles and proteins are made) in preparation for mitosis
•S phase – DNA synthesis (by semi-conservative replication); ready to divide by mitosis
•G2 phase – the cells continue to grow in preparation, e.g. protein synthesis (proteins made needed for the division)
Mitosis – the process by which cells undergo nuclear division (divide into two cells) to achieve growth and repair
