GB and The Empire

Hong Kong- British colony off China- Chairman Mao wanted it back for Communist China

GB would not give up Hong Kong which resulted in Chinese Terrorist attacks which resulted in 5 police officers losing their life. 1967

USA stopps support for Taiwan. 

China however gave GB 2 pandas in 1974 as a sign of friendship. 

1965 onwards- GB still believed that Rhodesias inderpendence illegal.

No troops were sent in and talks began.

Consistant- N.A.T.O 

Still Allies against Russia

Sharing Nuclear Technology and secrets 

Wilsons secret agreement- USA having 96 cruise missiles in the UK! In return for Trident. 

Diplomatic support e.g Vietnam 

However- Growing tensions with the USA. 

Relationship "not special" according to Wilson and Heath. Due to no troops in Vietnam. 

Turning point- Wilson advised Johnson not to put troops in Vietnam

Heath said NO to USA over bases in the UK

GB and Europe

(1963) and 1967 Britain were rejected after trying to get into the EEC. 

1973 GB got in!

The change was that we got in. 

1973 GB refused to let the USA use air bases (following Europes lead)

UK contributed to 20% of the budget but recieved 8% of spending. Have to start paying VAT.
