darker side to blogging

  • Iran and Syria disabled the internet to stop bloggers criticising their governments.
  • In Singapore, two chinese men imprisoned for anti-muslim remarks
  • In Myanmar, Nay Phone Latt was sentenced to 20 years for drawing a cartoon that  mimicked the head of state.

bloggers have lost jobs due to their blogs/posts on social media:

Mark Jen got dream job at Google, fired a month later for his personal blog where he shared his thoughts and views on his job.

PR Chief Justine Sacco, fired from her company IAC after tweeting "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. Im white!"

democratisation : everyone can post what they want. ^GOOD: voice can be heard.                     ^BAD: can be offensive, but can't pick+choose who's opinion we hear

FUTURE

WILL IT GET BORING? PRODUCERS HAVE TO KEEP CONTENT FRESH

MORE BLOGGERS- MORE COMPETITION - MORE DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO MAKE THEIR MARK --- SATURATED MARKETPLACE

TWO STEP FLOW--- SHARING, WHEN BLOGGERS TEND TO BECOME MORE WELL KNOWN, WHEN THEY GET MORE LUCRATIVE SPONSORSHIP DEALS

podcasts

PODCASTING : USING INTERNET TO MAKE DIGITAL RECORDINGS OF BROADCASTS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD ON COMPUTER OR MOBILE DEVICE.

advantages for audience : audience control, can choose when they listen. audience have stronger connection, as they can hear the voice of the presenter rather than reading.

issues for institutions : COPYRIGHT - content can be transferred to portable devices without restriction. SCHEDULING - audience wont be tuning into a programme when the station wants them to. AUDIENCE FRAGMENTATION - broadcasting of all types becoming more and more aimed at people with niche interests.

types: original content (sole purpose of distribution via podcasts, ANYTHING) re-purposed (re-purpose content as podcasts in video/audio formats) reference (old content gets new life eg historical speeches) professional (podcasts that have professional interviewers, audio engineering and editing.) content categories (arts, business, comedy etc)

narrowcasting

Narrowcasting - Broadcasting of all types is becoming increasingly

orientated towards providing for specialist or niche interests

Media institutions therefore are unable to reach a WIDER audience which
in turn effects the amount of money advertisers are willing to pay!

Could there be too much information being transmitted???

Is there too much choice for the audience to choose from?

QUANTITY ISNT ALWAYS QUALITY
