B4 - Quadrats and Population Size

How to estimate population size using quadrats (required for exam).

Quadrats and Population Size

Population: All the organisms of ONE SPECIES in a SINGE HABITAT.

Quadrat: A 1m2 square frame enclosing a known area.

You can estimate the population of an area by using a quadrat. This is done by counting the amount of the organism you are researching in the quadrat, and then scaling the results up to estimate the larger area.

Here's the method;

1.Count the organisms in the quadrat

2. Multiply the number of organisms by the total area of the habitat in m2.

This is one of many methods for estimating population size.
