Plants and animals grow from the cells in their body that keep multiplying.
• Mitosis produces cells for Growth, Repair or the replacement of the older cells.
• Mitosis is an important part of growth becasue Mitosis makes up things like hair,
teeth, skin and muscles and the cell division is involved in Mitosis.
• Most body cells have a nucleus containing chromosomes. The chromosomes carry
the genes that control chracteristics of the organism. Before a cell can divide the
gened that control characteristics of organism. Before a cell can divide it must make
a copy of all the chromosomes. When the cells splits, each new cell will contain
identical chromosomes, carrying identical genes. The new cells are called daughter
cells.
• Meiosis produces the Gamete cells.
• It is important that gametes have half the number of chromosomes becasue it helps
provide genetic variation in offspring.
• Mitosis = two cells, Diploid, genetically identical
• Meiosis = Four cells, Haploid, genetically different
• Growth is a permanent increase in the size or mass of an organism.
• All growth is result from the production of new cells by mitosis.
• Most cells are made for specific purposes. When cells divide they may undergo
differentiation. The new cells develop special characteristics to allow them to do
their job. For example, red blood cells differentiate from specail cells in the bone
marrow.
• Tissue is a collection of similar cells that perform the same function. An organ is a
collection of different tissues working together to perform a particular function.
• When new cells are formed around roots and stem tips, their cell walls are still soft
