Additional Biology(Unit 2)-Plant structure and Photosynthesis

?

Plant organs are organised into Tissues and Organs

Plants are made of organs like:

  • Stems
  • Roots
  • Leaves

These organs are made of tissues, for example the leaves are made of:

  • Mesophyll tissues- this is where most of the photosynthesis occurs in a plant.
  • Xylem and Phloem- they transport substances around the plant like:
    • water
    • mineral ions
    • sucrose
  • Epidermal tissue- this covers the whole plant.

The equation for photosynthesis:

Carbon Dioxide+Water(sunlight+ chlorophyll)--->Glucose +Oxygen

1 of 3

Photosynthesis produces glucose using sunlight.

Photosynthesis is the process that produces food in plants and algae. The food produced is glucose.

Photosynthesis happens inside the chloroplasts.

Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll which absorbs sunlight.

Oxygen is the by-product of photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis happens in the leaves of all green plants- this largely what leaves are for.
