Chapter 2 Keyword: Batch Processing system.

A processing system that processes batches of data at regular intervals. The amount of data being processed is usually large with the data being of identical type.
-Usually slow, delay recieving output.
-No user interaction required.
-Usually run on evenings or weekends as this is when the resources aren't required as much.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Batch processing operating syst

An operating system where a set of tasks are run and completed without any user intervention. The jobs/programs are collected, stored and run at any appropiate time.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Command line interface

An interface where the computer types commands for the computer to carry out.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Distributed processing system

A processing system where a number of computers are connected with each computer completing part of the processing. When all the processing has been completed the results are combined to meet the user requiements.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Forms dialogue

An interface where the computer outputs seperate prompts and response fields for a number of inputs.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Graphical user interface (GUI)

A user interface based on graphics (icons, pictures and menus) instead of text; uses a mouse as well as a keyboard as a input device.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Interactive operating system

An operating system where there is direct user interaction while a program is running.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Interactive processing system

Also known as transtitional processing system. This system handles transactions one at a time with each transaction being fully processed, the response given to the user and any associated files updated before the next transaction is processed.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Mental models

An explanation in someone's thought process for how something works in the real world. The mental model of the end user must be considered when designing a a system.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Menu/submenu

These enable the user to select an action which may then lead to a submenu  for further choices.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Model human processor

Developed by Card, Morgan and Newell. This concept attempts to portray the user of a computer system  as a computer including memory and processors.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Multi tasking operating system

An operating system where the processor is carrying out more than one task at a time, for example word processing and using the internet.

12 of 16

Chapter 2 Keyword: Natural language interface

A user interface where the user communicates in natural language ('speaks' to the interface). This may be typed or spoken, where the system recognises keywords and the context of the request.

Chapter 2 Keyword: Real-time operating system

An operating system that has been developed for real-time applications and is typically used for embedded applications (i.e. systems within another application).

Chapter 2 Keyword: Real time processing system

A processing system that processes data at the time it is required. The data must be handled within a specified maximum time limit.

15 of 16

Chapter 2 Keyword: Single-user operating system

Provides access to the operating system for one user at a time. The operating system can support more than one user account but only one account can be used at once.
