Landslide Victories

In politics, a ‘landslide’ victory is a massive win for one party, either in terms for percentage share of the vote or number of sears won in the House of Commons

tariffs

tariffs are taxes placed on goods imported into a country. They make British foreign goods more expensive, therefore, consumers are more likely to buy British goods. Tariffs raise money for the government. They are often referred to as ‘protectionism’ because, it was argued, they protected British Industry.

nonconformists awe Christians who do not belong to established churches (CoE or RC). For example, the Quakers or the Methodists

NC voting

Nonconformists traditionally voted for the Liberals. However, in the 1870s and 1880s, many had drifted away from the party over disagreements about Irish Home Rule: the idea of giving Ireland a degree of independence (like devolution)

Boer War

The Boer War was fought from 1899-1902. There were many complex causes of the war including the rights to gold and diamond mines and Britain’s attempts to bring the whole of South Africa (including Boer land) under British control.

1906 election

In the 1906 election, the Liberals won 400 seats, to 157 for the Conservatives. Over 200 Liberal nonconformist MPs were elected to parliament in 1906.
