There is an increase in the amount of pollution due to the increasing human popluation. Some of this pollution is cause by;
- more fossil fuels being burnt for heat and power
- more food being grown
- land being taken over for industry and housing
The above have led to an increase of pollution in water;
- Sulfur Dioxide, in the air, can dissolve in water and forms an acidic solution
- Pesticides used by farmers to kill weeds and/or insects may be washed or blown into streams and/or rivers
- Nitrate fertilisers are very soluble in water and therefore cannot be easily removed from the water. They are easily washed into the rives and reservoirs by the rain
