Alcohol Properties
1. Alcohols are flammable, they burn to produce
carbon dioxide and water
2. The first 3 alcohols all dissolve completely in
water to form neutral solutions

Uses of Alcohols
Ethanol is the main alcohol in alcoholic drinks. It's
not as toxic as methanol but it still damages the liver
and brain.
Alcohols can dissolve substances water can't dissolve
making it a very good solvent. Because of this it is
used in perfumes and aftershave lotions as it can mix
the oil (that gives the smell) with the water (which
makes up the volume).
Methylated spirit is ethanol with chemicals added to
it. It's used to clean paint brushes and as a fuel.
Ethanol is also used as a fuel in spirit burners as it's
fairly `clean' and doesn't smell. It can also be mixed
