Religion, Peace and Justice
War
More people die in wars due to more efficient weapons. More civilians are killed than
soldiers as soldiers are armed. In the past, wars were fought away from civilians.
~
The word `Islam' means `Peace'
When Muslims greet each other `As-Salamu alaykum' (Peace be with you) and in
response, `Alykum Salam' (and also with you)
Islam is not a pacifist religion, meaning that they don't see violence as always wrong.
The 4 Categories of Jihad
1. Jihad against one's own self (Jihad al-Nafs)
2. Jihad of the tongue (Jihad al-lisan) Telling others to do the will of god
3. Jihad of the hand (Jihad al-yad) writing to make a point to do what god
wants
4. Jihad of the Sword (Jihadd al-sayf) Lesser jihad
Greater Jihad The personal struggle of each Muslim to follow the teachings of
Islam and the example of Muhammad
Eg. Muslims waking up early to pray, even if they don't want to
wake up
Lesser Jihad The struggle to do God's will involves Muslims in physical battles.
The willingness to accept martyrdom for Allah.
Eg. Terrorism
Conditions for Holy War
1. War must be declared by a religious leader, not a political leader.
2. The religious leader must have the support of the community.
3. War must be declared in defense, not attack.
4. To restore freedom, not to win land or power.
5. War is declared because people are not allowed to pray freely, but not to
convert others.
6. War can only be declared if all peaceful ways of solving the conflict have
been tried.
7. Innocent civilians especially women and children must be protected.
8. Plants and animal life must be protected.
