Isomerism
Isomers 2 molecules which have the same molecular formula
but different molecular structures
Isomers are distinct compounds with different physical properties, and often different
chemical properties.
The occurrence of isomers is very common in carbon compounds because of the great
variety of ways in which carbon atoms can form chains and rings.
There are two ways in which atoms can be arranged differently in isomers:
Structural Isomers atoms are bonded together in a different order
Stereoisomers arrangement of atoms in space is different
Structural Isomerism
Structural isomers have the same molecular formula but have atoms bonded together in a
different order.
They have different structural formulae.
There are various ways in which structural isomerism can arise:
Chain isomerism
Position isomerism
Functional group isomerism
