Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterised by abnormal weight loss, usually below 85% of
what was previously considered normal, through the control of weight by unusual eating habits.
The psychological explanation of anorexia is explained through cultural ideas in the media which
portrays thin models on TV and magazines. This is a significant contributory factor in body image
concerns and the drive for thinness among Western adolescent girls because Gregory et al found
that in the UK, 16% of girls aged 15-18 were dieting which might lead to anorexia to look like
supermodels.
Research by Jones and Buckingham found that people with low self-esteem are more likely to
compare themselves to idealised images portrayed in the media, thus making the media's portrayal
of idealised bodies strongly influential amongst anorexics.
