· Giddens- attempted to construct a theory that is
halfway between structural theories & social action
theories. Giddens says there is a `duality of structure'.
Social behaviour is often the product of both social
structure & how we interpret that structure. For
example the structural influence of social class
generally shapes the educational experience of
working class pupils in that the majority of them leave
education with the minimum of educational
qualifications. However, some working-class people
may choose to resist these structural processes &
experience upward social mobility by taking evening
classes, doing OU degrees or working their way
upwards from the shop-floor. Giddens argues that as
free-thinking choice-making individuals we can
choose to accept or resist the influence of social
