Experiments
An experiment is when 2 groups or conditions are compares to see if there
is a difference
Experiments will involve at least 2 different variables (independent and
dependant)
There are 3 types of experiment: laboratory, field, natural
Variables
Independent variable is the one that is altered or changed to create 2
groups
Dependant variable is the one that you measure
Operationalise variables are used to make the experiment easy to use and
understand.
Operationalise variables
This term means to word the variables in a way which makes then very clear
and testable.
Operationalised independent variables should include both
groups/conditions
Operationalised dependent variables should relate to a number e.g. number
of..., score on..., rating on...
Examples
Non-Operationalised Operationalised
memory Pictures remembered in a minute
Happiness Number of times observed laughing in a
hour
Music 2 different types of music played
(classical or hip hop)
Attachment Attachment type measured in strange
situation as type A,B,C
