Combustion of a hydrocarbon candle


















When a fuel burns in air in reacts with oxygen to form
carbon dioxide and water vapour. This is what a candle
releases, as candle wax is only made up of carbon and
hydrogen elements.

Test for water

A piece of blue cobalt chloride paper turns pink in the
presence of water.

Test for carbon dioxide

Limewater becomes cloudy and white when carbon dioxide
bubbled through it.
