Chemistry Unit 3
Colour tests
During a flame test, the different metal compounds
burn with different colours:
L i t h i u m - R e d
S o d i u m - Y e l l o w
P o t a s s i u m - L i l a c
C a l c i u m - B r i c k R e d
B a r i u m - A p p l e G r e e n
C o p p e r - B l u e - G r e e n
Metal compounds in solution contain metal ions. Some of
these can form precipitates when reacted with Sodium
Hydroxide. They form different colours:
A l u m i n i u m h y d r o x i d e - W h i t e
C a l c i u m h y d r o x i d e - W h i t e
M a g n e s i u m h y d r o x i d e - W h i t e
C o p p e r h y d r o x i d e - B l u e
I r o n h y d r o x i d e (Fe2+ ion) - G r e e n
I r o n h y d r o x i d e (Fe3+ ion) - B r o w n
