Axon ­ the long extended part of a nerve cell
Binocular vision ­ using both eyes to view the same object so
that distance can be judged more accurately
Colour blindness ­ not being able to see certain colours such as
red and green
Dendrite ­ cellular extensions of nerve cells
Effector ­ an organ such as a muscle that causes a response to
a stimulus
Long sight ­ when the eye focuses light behind the retina
Motor ­ a nerve cell that carries instructions away from the
brain
Neurone ­ a name for a nerve cell
Receptor ­ an organ or cell that receives an external stimulus
Reflex arc ­ the pathway along which nerve impulses pass in a
simple reflex action
Relay ­ a nerve cell that passes an impulse between two other
cells
Sensory ­ a nerve cell that carries information to the brain
Sheath ­ the fatty coat that surrounds a nerve cell
Short sight ­ when the eye focuses light short of the retina
Synapse ­ a minute gap between two neurones
Transmitter ­ a chemical that transmits a nerve impulse across a
synapse
