Effects

  • 1788 petitions flooded into parliament. 1788, Manchester, 10000 people signed a petition. 1792, over 20000/75000 signed another petition in Manchester. Huge meetings were held.Campaigns didn't stop after 1807. They tried to make it illegal and free all existing slaves. 1814, 1 1/2 million signed petitions. More people signed petitions than the chartists in the 1840's.
  • At 10 Olaudah Equiano was taken from Africa to Barbados. Worked as a servant to a ships captain. Stayed in London for a bit. Learnt to read and be christian. Hoped to be let free but he was sold in America. Brought his freedom. He married. 1789, he wrote his life story. It was widely read. Worked with other abolitionists. He brought slavery to the public eye. He died in 1792.
  • French revolution in 1789 also took root in the island of st domingue. They allied with Britain. Slaves had high death rates due to the dreadful conditions. 1791 slaves rebelled, murdering white plantation owners and setting fir to the sugar cane factory. The British tried p control them but they were defeated. 1804, the island declared itself independent with the new name of Haiti.
  • Granville sharp had a meeting in 1765 and found a badly beaten slave who had escaped queuing up for free health care. Sharp took him to a hospital where he recovered. 2 years later he was healthy and worked as a messenger boy. one day his master saw him and wanted to take him to america. It went to court and sharp helped the man win the case. 1797, 12 opponents of slavery fought for abolition.
