Weapon focus- Johnson and Scott

Weapon focus- Johnson and Scott

Advantages

  • Steblay conducted a meta-analysis of studies concerning the weapon focus effect. it showed that the presence of a weapon reduces the chance of a witness correctly identifying the person holding the weapon.
  • Loftus et al monitored eyewitness eye movements and found that the presence of a weapon causes attention to be drawn to it.

Disadvantages

  • Field experiment-There is less control over extraneous variables that might bias the results. This makes it difficult for another researcher to replicate the study in exactly the same way.
  • Field- may have guessed the aims of the study because the participants new that they were waiting to take part in an experiment.
