  • Doesn't follow rules
  • ___Mira___
  • mira reflects two sides to a single personality. as they compliment each other at various moments.

  • tonias experience in the warsaw bombings gave her an intrinsic need to rebel against the normal.

  • Tonia is a cabaret singer- an atypically serious occupation7
  • A randomly picked victim of the communist regime.
  • she uses her feminine attributes as weapons. as she is forced to ***** it is expected that she would be humiliated but that is not the case. she does it with force and power and can also speak powerfully. she wins by not breaking.
  • She empowers herself through what is visually seen as a vulnerable action.
  • the role was written for a woman to show how the normal underdog can still be a person who has strength. sticks up for her own moral code of behaviour regardless of society's beliefs.
  • she thinks for herself and therefore is not a victim of propaganda.
  • The Polish Mother - the mother of sons willingly sacrificed for polands independence.
  • womanhood = motherhood. one is only a fully fledged woman when one becomes a mother

Development (Growth & change)

Other information

  • She becomes like a small animal, bagging for her life to end at the hands of her interrogator.
  • as her trial goes on she is more and more dignified. the camera uses close ups of her face to show these expressions.
  • she will not say what they want her to because it is simply not the truth. her interrogators are closed minded unlike herself.
  • Tonia is devoted to her marriage and establishes early how this is a source of strength for her.- in the dream scene she runs towards her husband-however he is now seeking a divorce. she is overwhelmed by the weak personality of her husband.
  • Stalinism - 1949-56. compared with Nazi idealism.
  • Nikita Krushchev's speech delivered at 20th congress of the communist party in 1956 where he renounced stalin's rule and crimes and created a time of thaw from Polands 'time of errors and distractions'
  • Honorata- Kills the man who tries to make her give up part of her self by taking her voters form
  • Zawada is the bad, bad guy. Morawski is set up to be the not so bad, bad guy ( an auschwitz survivor)
  • the stalinist regime reduced all data to an essentially good vs bad propaganda.
