  • 2. The way in which an object is created. For example, an essay may be created using a pen or pencil, or a PC or a printer.
  • 3.The expression , idea or plan that led to the creation of an object. For example, a poet may create an original work from an idea or plan in his or her mind.
  • 4. The aim for which an object is created. For example, a waterproof jacket is designed and made in order to keep people who wear it dry.

Overall summary

As an example to illustrate how the four causes wok together, consider a house.1. The material cause of the house is the bricks, the mortar, the glass, the wood that cause the structure to eventually exist.2.The Efficient Cause of the house is the process of building it:digging, and laying the foundations, completing the brickwork and roofing.3. The Formal Cause of the house is the architect's plan, and possibly the artist's impression- it is the design to which the house is made.4.The Final Cause of the house is the desire to create a dwelling for people to live in.Overall this is the movement from potentiality into actuality.
