The First World War increased rather than narrowed Germany's political divisions

Similarities

  • Burgfrieden was passed upon the outbreak of war - all differences put aside.
  • Reichstag delegated all of it's legislative powers to the Bundesrat. The Reichstag had the power to review, but did not change anything in the duration of war.
  • Founding of the German Fatherland Party, and then the creation of their rival the Peace League for Freedom and Fatherland

Differences

  • When America declared war on Germany in 1917, it led to polarisation of German politics.
  • Split in the socialist party and the creation of the USPD was a clear sign of growing polarisation
