The Truman Doctrine, 1947

Causes

  • The USA believed that Stalin was trying to spread communism and also because Greece was being threatened with a communist takeover. By early 1947, Britain told the USA that they could no longer afford to support the Greek and Turkish governments.

Effects

  • Greek government was able to defeat the communists.
  • The rivalry between the US and Soviet Union increased and the doctrine confirmed the division of the world into communist and non-communist.
  • The USA became committed to the policy of containment and far more involved in European affairs.
  • The USA decided on the Marshall and Stalin set up Cominform.

Overall summary

The Truman Doctrine helped to prevent the spread of communism into weaker European countries and therefore upheld the policy of containment. Increased tension between the USA and Soviets was also a consequence of the Truman Doctrine as it proved that the world was divided.
