Who are they?

Excused or Defers

  • 12 members of the public, randomly selected from the electoral register
  • Aged between 18-75
  • Registered as parlimentary or local government electorate
  • Ordinary resident in UK from 13th birthday for at least 5 years
  • Can't have past imprisonments
  • Can't have mental disorders
  • Can't be blind or deaf
  • Must have a good understanding of English
  • Anyone who has problems which make it difficult for them to do jury service
  • Court likely to reschedule their service on a more convenient date

Role

Advantages & Disadvantages

  • Only used in crown court
  • Allowed to ask judge questions
  • Deliberate in private
  • Decide verdict, judge decides sentence
  • Must first try have a unanimous verdict
  • If not then it goes to majority verdict
  • 11:1, 10:1, 9:1
  • Must have at least 10 jurours for majority verdict
  • Nominate a foreperson to deliver verdict
