The Berlin Blockade

Causes

  • The Cold War was creating tension
  • The USA and the UK wanted Germany to recover / Staling was looting German industrial capacity
  • Bizonia - the USA, UK and France merged zones and together became more prosperous than the USSR
  • Marshall Aid increased tension

Effects

  • 24th June 1948 - Stalin closed all rail and road links to Berlin.  It lasted 11 months
  • The allies airlifted supplies to Berlin
  • 275,000 flights
  • 12th May 1949 Stalin reopened the borders

Overall summary

The Cold War got worse, and the East and West became more split.  NATO and the Warsaw pact were formed and the Arms Race began
