Strengths and weaknesses of Rule Utilitarianism

Advantages

It is arguably a more intelligent and thoughtful approach than Bentham's theory.
It avoids the pitfalls of Bentham;s hedonic calculus, such as allowing for immoral acts.
It comes across as a more refined and nobler system of thought.

Disadvantages

Was Mill right when he argued that higher pleasures are better than lower pleasure? We need lower pleasures to survive.
It is too complex a system to calculate.

Evaluation

Due to its complexity it is therefore of no practical use.
