Single Transferrable Vote

Advantages

  • Lots of choice for voters
  • Difficult to vote tactically- second, third choices etc.
  • Proportional government- no wasted votes and equal value of votes
  • Minor parties benefit in second and third choices etc.
  • Coalition?

Disadvantages

  • Complex system
  • Results take time to come through- lots of recounting
  • Coalition?

Evaluation

List of candidates, number in order of your preference, those who achieve the quota on first preference are elected, then 2nd and 3rd choices are distributed, continues until the correct number have candidates have reached the quota and been elected. Used for Northern Ireland Assembly
