Causes

  • Sichuan is positioned close to the colllision zone between the Eurasian plate and Indian plate
  • These plates became temporarily stuck, causing a build up of pressure
  • The pressure built up until it was released with a sudden jolt along a major fault
  • This slippage along the major fault caused the earthquake.

Effects

  • Ground shaking caused cracks in buildings in Chengdu
  • Buildings across China evacuated
  • In Beichuan, 80% of all buildings destroyed
  • School in Dujiangyan collapsed, fewer than 60 of the 900 children survived
  • Transport disrupted - railway line distorted and airport closed
  • Water mains were broken
  • Power supplies were cut as power lines and hydroelectric power stations were destroyed
  • Landslides buried roads and buildings - meaning the work of relief teams was more difficult
  • Heavy rains increased instability on steep slopes and landslides dammed rivers cauisng water to pond back, forming lakes
  • Risk of disease due to a lack of food, water and medical supplies
