Secondary Research analysis

Advantages

  • Good overview of a market
  • Usually based on actual sales figures or research on large samples
  • It is often obtained without cost.
  • Less time-consuming

Disadvantages

  • Data may not be regularly updated
  • It's not tailored to your own needs
  • Expensive to buy reports on many different market places
  • May not be reliable or valid

Evaluation

Methods of secondary research include: Internet, Trade press (Magazines specialising in the market), Government-produced data (National Statistics). There appears to be an equal balance of advantages and disadvantages for secondary research, although if the researcher has to retrieve data in a short period of time with a limited amount of funding - then secondary research would be more suited. Although, any out-of-date information may not be particularly useful for the research because it can be argued against with new, frequently-updated information.
