Religious experience proves no evidence of the exitence of God

Advantages

  • William James - ( The Varieties of Religious Experience ): he say that to have an experience you must have P.I.N.T which is passivity, ineffability, noetic and transiency. -- mystical experience
  • Swinburne - says there is five types of religious experiences which are; interpretation, identifying the unique as supernatural, private, indescribable and having the feeling of God. he also suggested the principle of credulity (P.O.C) and  principle of testimony (P.O.T) which state that you should believe yourself and others if the have a religious experience
  • Otto - ( The Holy Idea) numinous experience - religious experience gives us feelings of awe and wonder - he says that there are three qualities of religious experiences which are feelings that God is both dangerous and attractive, feelings of his importance and the  feeling of the mysterious

Disadvantages

  • Ockham's Razor - simplest explanation's is usually the reason for something to happen - naturalistic explanation?
  • Russell - life style - "if you eat too little you see visions, if you drink too much you see snakes" - hallucinations/drugs/poor diet lack of sleep/ alcohol/ mental health and or physical health
  • Feuerbach - religion is fiction mistaken for reality - it is the invention of the mind
  • Freud - invention as we want a father figure to guide us, it gives us false security as we are ashamed of our desires i.e. sexual desire - ID, EGO, SUPEREGO
  • Flew - a bunch of weak argument's doesn't make one strong one.

Evaluation

The view that religious experiences doesn't prove the existence of God is more convincing then the belief that God exist and the prof is religious experiences due to the fact that we cannot be truly sure that someone has had an experience it could have been a spasm in the brain or life style choice that could have made someone believe or a group of people to believe they are having an experience. also like Ockham said it is usually the simplest explanation that is the true one i.e. I didn't eat enough and so thought I seen something.
