Popular recreation were part of 18th century peasant life, which was tougher for the lower class who were often agricultural workers. The sports and pastimes played reflected the harshness. The pub was central to village life and hosted pastimes such as bear and badger baiting, dog fighting as well as less barbaric games like billiards.
