Personality

Role

  • Simple - had some kind of mental disability, referred to as a bear throughout the book, eg. 'dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws' (p3) and 'came as silently as a creeping bear moves' (p113).
  • Childlike/naive - doesn't understand the world around him. Slim says 'he's jes' like a kid' (p49). George feels bad at the beginning of the book when he takes the mouse of Lennie as he sees it as if he is taking away a child's toy.
  • Physically strong - Lennie is 'strong as a bull' according to George. His mind is not capable of controlling his body so that is why he can easily kill the mice as he does not know his strength.
  • Misunderstood - he is innocent and does not want/mean to hurt anyone. This is shown when he has the fight with Curley, he clearly does not want to hurt him so he hesitates but when George tells him to fight back he does.
  • Loyal to George - as George is seen as a slight parental figure to Lennie as George is the one that is caring for him and keeping him out of danger. Lennie will do anything George says as he trusts that George will do the best for him, for example, at the end of the book George tells Lennie to turn around and 'Lennie obeyed'. This shows that even at the end of his life, Lennie trusts George completely and this helps the reader to understand that George is killing him for the best.
  • CONTEXT: Lennie represents the mentally disabled people in the 1930s America - they did not have good facilities/treatments and where seen as useless in societies. If they did not have anyone to look after them they would usually end up in a mental asylum where there was a lot of testing and it was not a pleasant place to be.
  • Protagonist (main character)
  • Section 1 - Lennie is with George heading to the ranch. It is told that something happened with Lennie in Weed. Lennie has a dead mouse that he has killed and has been petting, George makes him get rid of it. Lennie makes George tell him a story about the ranch they are going to buy which has obviously been told to him many times.
  • Section 2 - The boss questions Lennie and seems to accept that he is simple but harmless. Curley is rude and aggressive towards Lennie as he is bigger than him. Curley's wife comes into the Ranch House and Lennie is attracted to her. George arranges to meet Lennie by the pool if there is trouble.
  • Section 3 - George explains how Lennie was 'run out' of weed, Lennie was accused of ****. Lennie is given one of Slim's puppies. Curley breaks in and Lennie breaks his hand.
  • Section 4 - Lennie meets Crooks and Candy joins them in Crooks' room. They talk about the dream but are interrupted by Curley's wife. Later on, Lennie accidentely kills his pup.
  • Section 5 - Lennie is trying to bury the puppy, Curley's wife comes in and asks him to stroke her hair. She panics and Lennie breaks her neck. Lennie runs away and the others workers obviously know Lennie was the killer.
  • Section 6 - Lennie goes down to the pool. He sees visions of his Aunt Clara and a giant rabbit. George finds him but realises that he'd be better off dead than in a prison/mental asylum so he shoots him.Enter bullet point
