Neuroscience - looks at the function and structure of the human brain, the spinal cord and nervous system. It combines both psychology and biology to further our understanding of physical, psychological and neurological health conditions.

Neuroscience.

AdvantagesGetting StartedGetting Started

  • Understanding Conciousness: Doctors can make more knowledgeable decisions on whether they should turn off a life support machine for a person who is showing no evidence of conciousness by seeing if there is any stimulation in the claustrum.
  • Treating Criminal Behaviour: Offering drugs to criminals to cure their impulsive and aggressive behaviour could mean a safer society to live in.
  • Treating Criminal Behaviour: If we know what regions of the cerebral cortex are effected to create criminal behaviour then we can keep an eye on those with deformities in these regions.
  • Treating Criminal Behaviour: May result in the criminal transitioning back into society as the problem will be solved. Currently society rejects criminals due to the fear they will reoffend.
  • Enhancing Neurological Function: Would help enhance an individual's abilities particularly students with their exams.
  • Enhancing Neurological Functions: Cohen Kadosh found that passing a small electric current around specific regions leads to mathematical, language, memory and region capabilities.

Disadvantages

  • Understanding Conciousness:Doctors may use this to their advantage as they can empty beds and in Wales there is the opt out system so if a doctor needs a donor they could use this to turn off a life support machine.
  • Understanding conciousness: Raises questions about ethical morality
  • Understanding Conciousness: Koubeissi et al - study was done on an epileptic woman so there were brain abnormalities so cant be generalised.
  • Treating Criminal Behaviour: Only biological factors are taken into account, cultural factors may also play a part.
  • Treating Criminal Behaviour: Drugs may have horrible, devastating side effects on the individual.
  • Enhancing Neurological Functions: There is not training for practitioners which could lead to brain damage.
  • Enhancing Neurological Functions: Could have long term damage on developing brains.

Evaluation

In summary, understanding consciousness  could possibly be economically beneficial to use the claustrum research, however may be morally wrong as it is a decision on life or death. Treating criminal behaviour would prove to be very beneficial to society as a whole but has very little advantages for the individual as it potentially stops them being them self. Also drugs on solve the problem on a short term basis, as soon as the drugs are taken away there will be withdrawal symptoms and the impulsive behaviour will return. Enhancing neurological functions has the potential to help students and allow society to advance, however may cost lives due to lack of licensing rules and training.
