Need for ATP

Causes

  • Chemical Work
  • Transport Work
  • Mechanical Work
  • Bioluminescence & Electrical discharge
  • Maintenance of a constant body temperature

Effects

  • The synthesis of complex substances from simple molecules (anabolic reactions). Eg making polypeptides from amino-acids
  • Active transport of substances against their concentration gradient. E.g. sodium-potassium pump.
  • E.g beating of cilia, movement of sperm, contraction of skeletal muscle and movement of vesicles.
  • Conversion of luciferin into a form which luciferase can bind to requires the presence of ATP
  • The heat energy required to maintain constant body temperature is obtained from respiration in all cells and especially biochemical reactions in the liver.

Overall summary

All living organisms require energy to sustain work. Energy is all about performing work. For living organisms to do work, energy-requiring reactions must be linked to those that yield energy.
