Advantages
- Primary/recency effect suggests there are two separate stores
- Cases such as HM suggest there are two separate stores too (STM normal but LTM damaged)
|
Disadvantages
- Proposes that rehearsal is necessary for LTM store, this may be important in some cases, but in everyday situations we rarely consciously rehearse something yet can still store a lot
- Over-simplified; suggests that the stores work in single, uniform ways which has been shown by the working memory model to not be the case, by showing STM has sub-systems
- Artificial lab tasks for evidence; artificial learning tasks, low ecological validity
- KF - STM poor for verbal memories but find for visual, suggests there are sub-systems in short term memory which contradicts the multi-store model
- KF - STM damaged but LTM fine. Suggests that memories passed from sensory memory to long term store, as if information went through STM, LTM would be affected
