Impulsive (falls in love with Hero very quickly), shallow (seems to see her more as an object than a person; does not feel for her at all when he is angry, thinking that she has betrayed him), brave (is said to have fought bravely in the wars).

Benedick's and Don Pedro's friend, is in love with Hero, presents a contrast in his way of being in love to Benedick's way.

Seems to be very much in love with Hero, or rather with her appearance, on first meeting her (as she does not speak once during that meeting). However, his question "Can the world buy such a jewel?" and his making sure that she is rich hint that he regards her not so much as a person but as an object.Later in the play he does seem very hurt that she has betrayed him (although she has not) but he is cruel to her, which Benedick would not have been to Beatrice in similar circumstances. He does seem repentant after he finds out that Hero is innocent and thinks that she is dead. However, he does not seem against marrying someone else.

Is described as a "lamb" accomplishing feats of a "lion" in the wars. This probably means that he is young.Makes sure that Hero is rich before deciding to marry her. This shows that he may not be so much in love with her as he seems, particularly given how cruel he is to her when her believes she has betrayed him.Even if he is truly in love with Hero, his love for her is not as pure as Benedick's love for Beatrice later in the play. While Benedick falls in love with Beatrice as a whole person, Claudio does not trouble to find out about Hero's personality and is only interested in her looks ("But fare thee well, most foul, most fair! Farewell Thou pure impiety and impious purity!")
