Migration Policies

Advantages

  • Can help address underpopulation
  • Helps address labour shortages - immigrants often do jobs the native population don't want to do
  • Meets specific skills shortages: doctors, teachers, engineers
  • Working-aged immigrants pay taxes which help pay for services
  • Immigrants add to a country's culture and talent

Disadvantages

  • Pressures on housing, health care and education caused by immigrants
  • Fear by native population that immigrants are taking their jobs
  • Discrimination, abuse of immigrants
  • Perception that immigrants take advantage of state benefits
  • Can alienate native population
  • Quotas or skills test may cause problems for people who want to bring family to live with them

Evaluation

Whilst there are many advantages and disadvantages as a result of immigration, the overall outcome is positive. These people entering the country have so much to offer and should have the equal opportunity as everyone else. They contribute towards the economy and pay taxes which help to improve the healthcare and education system. Many of these people will come will families, so countries with a declining population will find immigrants very useful. However, we must consider the negatives. The abuse received by the immigrants can hurt them significantly and no one should have to be put through that pain. In addition, the pressures on housing may lead to my greenfield sites being destroyed in order to provide the growing population with a living space.
