• she and her husband noticed they were being burned by the material they were handling during their research - known as RADIUM

• radium was used in radiography to diagnose and remove cancerous growths
• beginning of modern treatments
• later: greater understanding of atoms and their power
• led to splitting of nucleus of an atom by other scientists
• also brought portable x ray machines into the battlefield- bullets could be found inside soldiers bodies for surgery
