Causes
- Reflection
- Scattering
- Absorbption

Effects
- Clouds prevent light visible light and infrared
radiation from reaching a satellite because they are reflected from the bottom
of the cloud. Radar can penetrate clouds but it can then be scattered by raindrops.
- Blue light is scattered by molecules of
nitrogen and oxygen, due to its high frequency and short wavelength. This
prevents the blue light be reflected back to the satellite and therefore is a limitation
of the image. This is why the sky is blue too. Larger molecules can also
scatter green and red light.
- Infrared
and U.V are both absorbed by certain molecules in the earth’s atmosphere. U.V
by ozone and infrared by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and water vapor.
