Advantages
- EV's and CV's can be controlled- this means that the effect of them on the DV can be minimized- so cause and effect between the IV and DV can be established (high internal validity)
- can be easily replicated- due to the standardized procedure- if results are the same this conforms their validity
|
Disadvantages
- may lack generalizability- the controlled lab environment may be rather artificial and participants are aware they are being studied- thus behavior may not be 'natural' and cant be generalized to everyday life- so it has low external validity
- demand characteristics may be a problem- the cues in the experimental situation that cause a particular response from the participants may cause the results of the experiment to be less down to the effect of the IV, and more because of the cues.
