Lab experiments evaluation

Advantages

  • EV's and CV's can be controlled so their effects are minimised and which gives the research high internal validity.
  • Can be easily replicated due to standardised procedure the experiment can be repeated. If other results are similar this confirms its validity.

Disadvantages

  • May lack generalisability as a controlled lab environment is artificial and participants are aware they are being studied. Their behaviour may not be natural and can't be generalised to everyday life (low external validity.
  • Demand characteristics can be a problem. These are cues from the researcher that may leak the aim of the study to the participant which changes their behaviour. Results of experiment may be because of cues rather than effect on IV.

Evaluation

Lab experiments are good as you can control variables and they have good internal validity, however they can't always be generalised to everyday life and demand characteristics may occur
