Is legalism still a threat to the church?

Advantages

  • we have so many denominational spilts that false teaching is bound to be getting taught
  • belief in "universalism" is wrong- not everyone will be saved but some believe that Christians and muslims will all be because of belief in the "same God"
  • too much focus on rules still within churches- e.g catholic church have seven sacraments
  • only 22 percent of Americans believe that the bible is the actual word of God
  • Pentecostal Christians might think they are more superior- a sense of self righteousness

Disadvantages

  • we have groups that try to brings divisions together to prevent false teaching e.g events like summer madness bring together all denominations so no one feels superior
  • Paul said, "if people could be saved by the law, Christ died for nothing"- the protestant church perhaps relate more to this stance as they teach salvation through faith more
  • we no longer have the issue of circumcision so do not have so called, "judaisers"
  • churches today focus more on the power of love- agape

Evaluation

yes, legalism needs to be tackled still today in the church- there are too many rules associated with the catholic church- for example, the protestant approach to divorce may be correct. However, today we do not have the same situation as Paul did with the Judaisers.
