INTERACTIVE - BRUNER

?

COGNITIVE - PIAGET (1896-1980)

Advantages

  • Children can't grasp aspects of language until they're ready.
  • The stages of development support this.

Disadvantages

  • Children who have been deprived of social contact can't achieve complete communicative competence.
  • Berko and Brown's 'fis' phenomenon suggests cognitive understanding can be present but they're physical development still impacts their ability to use language.
  • Children with cognitive difficulties can still use language.

Evaluation

Piaget believed that children can only use certain linguistic structures when they understand the concept involves, for example they can only use the past tense once they understand the concept of the past itself. This links acquisition directly to intellectual development.
