Hydrogen fuel cells

Advantages

  • hydrogen and oxygen react to produce water, which isn't a pollutant so doesn't effect climate change.
  • it is a clean reaction
  • hydrogen is made from water which is a plentiful resource and this therefore means that it won't run out for a long time
  • fuel cells are good because they never run down or need charging so they wouldn't need to be replaced like normal batteries
  • the only by-products are water and heat
  • help countries become less dependant on crude oil

Disadvantages

  • for this reaction to occur a special engine is needed which is really expensive
  • also for hydrogen to be made form the electrolysis of water, energy is needed which uses up the world's precious resources.
  • hydrogen is difficult to store safely
  • hydrogen is very explosive
  • hydrogen is a gas so takes up a lot more space to store than liquid fuels like petrol

Evaluation

They are useful as they don't pollute the world with harmful gases that contribute to climate change. But, because they require energy to be made if it is being made by the electrolysis of water or from hydrocarbons (form fossil fuels) it still uses precious resources so replace conventional fuels like petrol.
