How far do you agree that the revolt in the kingdom of Aragon in the years 1591-2 shows both the weakness and strength of the King of Spain?

Advantages

  • Philip tried to move Perez's case to the court of the Inquisition
  • Philip sent in an army to crush the rebellion
  • The army dealt no resistance
  • The leaders of the rebellion were executed
  • Philip introduced a number of changes to the government to increase his power

Disadvantages

  • Perez escaped from his imprisonment in Castile to Aragon
  • Philip tried to move Perez's case to the court of the Inquisition
  • Perez escaped to France
  • Philip did not leave his army in Aragon after the revolt
  • Aragon was mainly unchanged

Evaluation

Philip was successful in preventing the revolt from spreading so I believe that the revolt in Aragon displays only his strength. This is because he was able to stop the revolt without any extreme hostility towards him, which resulted in him gaining more influence in Aragonese government.
