Graphite and Diamond

Similarities

  • High mp
  • Very strong covalent bonds

Differences

  • Graphite- conducts electricity-delocalised electrons
  • Graphite- free electrons
  • Diamond- tetrahedron
  • Graphite- hexagon
  • Graphite-3 carbon-carbon bonds
  • Diamond- 4 carbon-carbon bonds
  • Graphite- layers-between layers there are free electrons
  • Graphite-lubricates-layers can slide over easily

Overall comparison

All in all, graphite is shown as a softer giant structure than diamond, this is because of the one delocalised electron that graphite has, that allows it to conduct electricity unlike diamond. But they both need that high melting point, because their covalent bonds are harder to break, as they are very strong.
