Functionalist Perspective of family

Advantages

  • meets the needs of society through socialising children into shared norms and values
  • provides security for conception and society
  • stabilises adult personalities
  • sexual division of labour
  • men = Instrumental roles
  • Women = Expressive roles
  • women provide: Warmth, and security

Disadvantages

  • Instrumental roles refer to roles of the breadwinner which can lead to stress and anxiety
  • too much pressure from the family can destabilise adult personalities
  • Not all happy and harmonious and ignores things such as domestic abuse
  • outdated perspectives as both genders do instrumental and expressive roles
  • undermines women's power such as the triple shift

Evaluation

Functionalists over-all view is the family is a supportive and general happy institution PARSONS: contemporary society is losing its function due to structural differentiation such as the welfare state Rising standards and welfare state overtake some functions of the family as the kin is not needed as much in times of high stress
