Euthanasia

Advantages

  • Personal autonomy
  • The 'quality of life' principle
  • Euthanasia will end a person's suffering
  • Not allowing euthanasia will put pressure on society
  • It shortens the families suffering
  • It would allow us to regulate what already happens
  • Voluntary euthanasia is already allowed in other European countries
  • It is not right to prolong life of a dying person with limited, expensive treatments

Disadvantages

  • Principle of the 'sanctity of life'
  • People who suffer from mental illness are vulnerable
  • Making doctors or nurses do euthanasia will undermine people's confidence in them
  • There could be a mistaken diagnosis
  • There could be a motive behind it
  • 'Slippery Slope' argument
  • Euthanasia does not just affect the patient
  • Doctors have a duty to protect life
  • Death does not have to be painful - the Hospice Movement

Evaluation

Euthanasia should be allowed in the UK if it is the patient's wish to. They may have decided years in advance because they knew of an illness or so forth. If other countries are able to allow it then so should we. We should be able to protect our people by allowing euthanasia to occur on our grounds and under our restrictions.
